Skirt Wars, Round 3

Our next Skirt Wars competition is between Laurie (Events Manager), Morgan (Executive Assistant) and Sara (Seamstress). Each of them designed and named their individual Limited Edition skirt, becoming involved in the process of conception to marketing and sales. The criteria for deciding who wins this friendly competition consists of: the athletic skirt with the most sales, the quickest skirt to sell out, and the skirt with the most votes on Facebook (vote here). Check out these fabulous skirts and let us know what you think! Shop for them.

National Sewing Machine Day

In honor of National Sewing Machine Day June 13th, we'd like to celebrate our seamstresses! A lot of care and detail going into sewing, snapping and testing each athletic skirt. Tina, Pam, Sara and Debby all work out of our Vancouver, WA store, while we have several other seamstresses who sew out of their homes. Since Sweet Spot Skirts began in 2010, we have focused on keeping production made in the USA for several reasons. First, Stephanie wants to support local seamstresses and stay at home moms looking to make a flexible income with their skills. This is her way to support the local economy instead of outsourcing. Second, it's important to us to be able to ensure high quality standards. So many fast fashion clothing pieces are made overseas, and we want our customers to know where their athletic clothing is coming from. We recently expanded our flagship store to include a manufacturing area where you can see the seamstresses in action with the sewing machines, creating your favorite adjustable, reversible skirts in bright, beautiful fabrics. Stop by to experience it first hand. Thank you for shopping local. We are so proud to be "Made in the USA!"

Did you Know? A little History of the Sewing Machine

Thomas Saint, a skilled cabinet-maker and English inventor, received the first patent for a design of a sewing machine in 1790.  The original invention was meant for leather and canvas, and no evidence of it, other than his drawings, could be found. It wasn't until 1874 when William Newton Wilson found Saint’s drawings in the London Patent Office, that he made adjustments and built a working model.  This sewing machine model is currently owned by the London Science Museum. Some other notable people:
  • 1832- Walter Hunt invented the first American lockstitch sewing machine
  • 1842- John Greenough patented the first sewing machine in the United States
